Managing Musculoskeletal Injuries at Work
A large manufacturing company found that musculo-skeletal injuries were accounting for a large proportion of their absence. The company was keen to address this problem and in particular to reduce the time employees were off work as a result of injuries. It was decided that a regular weekly on-site physiotherapy service could help minimise absence and speed up the return to work process.
Using an On-site Physiotherapy Service
CA Ergonomics was approached to devise an on-site strategy that would be cost-effective in terms of achieving significant savings in absence that would more than cover the investment in the physiotherapy service. A three pronged approach was developed that involved
1. Telephone triage to ensure a speedy response to any employee off work with a musculo-skeletal injury. The Occupational Physiotherapist could provide immediate advice and guidance on how the employees could effectively manage their injuries and eliminate unnecessary delays for treatment
2. An on-site treatment service that avoided long periods of absence to travel and attend external treatments as well as providing return to work and rehabilitation programmes that dealt effectively with issues in the workplace.
3. Functional assessments to ensure all employees were able to manage a return to work programme.
Cost-Effectiveness of an On-site Physiotherapy Service
The savings the company made on absence was 4x the amount they spent on the on-site physiotherapy savings showing an excellent return on investment.
“CA Ergonomics has provided a professional, consistent on site treatment programme for all employees. This has been integral to our rehabilitation programme and has enabled the business to move forward with its strategic absence reduction plan. Their services are flexible and therefore extremely customer focused which is vital in our 24/7 business environment.” HR Manager.
